The Prologue to the Gospel

1:1 In the beginning ¹ was the Word, and the Word was with God,² and the Word was fully God.³ 1:2 The Word ⁴ was with God in the beginning. 1:3 All things were created ⁵ by him, and apart from him not one thing was created ⁶ that has been created.⁷ 1:4 In him was life,⁸ and the life was the light of mankind.⁹

So you might wonder what the Word is. In normal talk, a word is a couple of letters put together that make sense, but here, the Word is Jesus. So, back in the beginning. It means that right from the beginning Jesus was there and He made us. He is God. 
I'm going to skip ahead to the story now.

1:6 A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.

It's pretty easy to tell that this means god sent a guy named John. That is some information, but not much. We want to know the

• Who
• What
• Where
• When
• Why

How     

We already have the who - John. Let's see if we can find the why.

Check this out.

He came as a witness ¹⁵ to testify ¹⁶ about the light, so that everyone ¹⁷ might believe through him.

If you look carefully, you'll figure it out. The why is to preach to the world about Jesus. So check why, check who.


He himself was not the light, but he came to testify¹⁸ about the light. 


Now, it says that John was not the light. john is to tell ABOUT the light.

The true light, who gives light to everyone,¹⁹ was coming into the world.In the end of verse eight, it says he was to bear witness of the Light. Now, here in verse nine it says that that was the real, true light. Not John.
